Mary's gas was cut off in the middle of the winter. Mary's disabled son, in particular, needs the heat and hot water that require gas service. Mary's pediatrician called the Medical Legal Partnership. Armed with the relevant law that prohibits termination of gas in the middle of the winter and requires continued service for households with seriously ill residents, a law student, supervised by a Medical Legal Partnership attorney, was able to negotiate with the gas company to have Mary's gas restored.
Often, health care providers are faced with non-medical issues that confront their patients and impede patient and family health. Some common situations that may involve both a medical and a legal intervention include:
- Asthma exacerbated by moldy or cockroach infested housing can be addressed by a doctor through medication. Lead poisoning can be addressed through medical intervention. A lawyer can help in both cases by assiting the family to enforce their right to safe housing.
- Developmental delays often must be addressed by the health care provider as well as the child's school. If the school is not providing adequate services to the student, a lawyer can assist
- A parent with a disabled child may require assistance securing available benefits, like SSI, to help provide for the child's needs
